While governments and international organizations debate
the best ways to meet development targets such as the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs), millions of ordinary people are
taking action.
The Japan Trade Union Confederation, known as RENGO,
holds regular discussions with NGOs, including JOICFP, on
how its members can cooperate with civil society in international
development. RENGO is focusing on concrete steps that its
6.8 million members can take to support the achievement of
the MDGs.
JOICFP has made clear that while advocacy to governments
and policy makers is essential, it is also necessary for individuals
to do what they can. JOICFP's international
campaign encourages activities such as collecting used
stamps, or donating even as little as one yen a day, and then
shows donors how these small actions make a real difference
to the lives of people in developing countries.
These concrete steps make it clear to RENGO members how they
can make a difference in supporting the MDGs by assisting
with reducing maternal and child mortality, and combating
the spread of HIV/AIDS, especially at the grassroots. It also
is an opportunity for RENGO to be seen to be taking its social
responsibilities seriously by taking action.
Labor unions have been losing influence in the workplace,
but supporting development goals revitalizes their causes
of social justice.
