Falling Birthrate to Meet its Match?

'Omiai' or traditional matchmaking in Japan is starting to receive more attention as the Japanese government is hoping it will make a comeback in an effort to revive the falling birthrate.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has requested TV companies to lift self-imposed advertising restrictions on matchmaking, and METI is looking to certificate agenciesf services.

There are around 4,000 matchmaking agencies in Japan with about 600,000 clients. A METI study group says that people are marrying later, and that there are fewer opportunities to meet potential partners.
