| JOICFP Assists China NPFPC in Expansion of Service Provision and Quality
After a special request to JOICFP, a ten-member Chinese study team from the National Population and Family Planning Commission of China (NPFPC) was in Japan from 24th to 29th September. The team was headed by Zhang Shikun, Director, the Department of Science and Technology, NPFPC, on her first visit to Japan, and included directors in charge of medical aspects from provincial PFPCs and research experts.
JOICFP has over 20 years of cooperation with China in reproductive health and family planning (RH/FP), including support by IPPF, and was instrumental in the development of the national China Training Center of Reproductive Health and Family Care (CTC) that opened in October 2005 in Taicang, Jiangsu Province.

NPFPC is looking to develop the focus and provision of its care as the structure of the Chinese population changes. The field of RH is broad, and it is being expanded, for example, to cover the needs of children and the elderly.
Due to the size of Chinafs population, there are many health service providers who have not been met to the needs of the community people in health care, and the visit to Japan was to observe first-hand and better understand the human-centered approach of RH/FP health services, especially so that the capacity of Chinafs 150,000 medical staff and technicians in family planning institutions could be increased.

Through lectures, observations of health care activities and discussions with local administration, health service providers, and NGOs including Japan Family Planning Association, the Chinese team saw how cooperation between all levels from the grassroots, medical institutions and research centers to the government level provided excellent health care for the people.
In addition, the quality of training provided to medical technicians impressed the visitors and encouraged them to improve standards in China.
