Does Japan's Change
of Guard Presage a Return to the Bad Old Days?

In an article for the online edition of the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, Dr. Kunio Kitamura, Director, Japan Family Planning Association Clinic, comments on Japan's new Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.

Dr. Kitamura questions the credentials of Abe with regards to sex education, equal employment and gender equality, pointing out that when Abe was Cabinet Secretary he showed no interest in sex education to stem the rise in teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Furthermore, Dr. Kitamura reminds us of how the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) posted erroneous information on its website on the use of the Pill, purporting it to come from WHO, under the theme of 'racy sex education'.

Dr. Kitamura ends his comments with a reference to Abe's alleged ultra-conservative nature, and wonders what the fate of Japan will be.
