Corporate Assistance More Valuable than Ever

Since 2000, NYK Line has been assisting JOICFP by providing transportation and containers for reconditioned bicycles, and school backpacks and stationery.

In addition to the shipping and other transportation charges, recipients of the bicycles and backpacks from JOICFP adapt the containers for use as clinics, youth centers, and housing, for example, or sell them and use the proceeds for project activities.

NYK had initially approached JOICFP with its idea of donating transportation as this was a natural fit for its business and increased the profile of its corporate social responsibility.

On 31st January, over 200 people attended a media event at NYK. Ten NPOs/NGOs that NYK cooperates with, including JOICFP, held stalls explaining their activities and how NYK assists them.

A lot of media attention was given to the event, especially as the popular sumo wrestling star Kotooshu, who appears in advertisements for NYK Line, attended.

As governments and international donors around the world cut back on ODA, cooperation with the business sector is even more important for NPOs/NGOs to effectively sustain activities.

NPOs/NGOs can strengthen cooperation by looking for how businesses can match their existing activities to the NPO/NGO needs, rather than just seek financial contributions.
