NGOs Prepare and Stress Dialog
for 2007 German G8 Summit
On 28th and 29th November 2006, a G7 NGO Coalition meeting
was held in Berlin in preparation for the G8 Summit to be
held in Germany in June 2007 under the theme of "Growth
and Responsibility."
Furthermore, other high-level meetings will be held prior
to the G8 Summit, and NGO input is needed for those as well.
Representing the largest network NGOs in each country, the
NGO participants mutually confirmed their desire for poverty
reduction and Africa to be topics for the G8 Summit, and were
able to meet with the chief facilitator for the G8 Summit.
Both sides stressed that dialog was key to civil society contributing
input to G8 policy. Hideyuki Takahashi, Vice-Chair, JANIC
and Director, Resource Development and Campaign, JOICFP, participated
in the meeting.

G7 NGO network representatives meet with G8-Summit representatives at the German Ministry of Economics and Technology.
One of the topics for discussion was that NGOs realize that
although many international declarations and statements have
been issued, achieving what has been promised has often not
fully occurred. While NGOs make great efforts to have their
input accepted by governments, little is done in the way of
monitoring government accountability to international commitments.
Donor communities raise the issue of transparency and corruption
in aid. If NGOs and civil society, who are representing the
tax-payers, have greater input in policy and monitoring of
aid, the effectiveness of aid will increase and corruption
and other problems with aid delivery will decrease.
In addition, NGOs in developing countries are raising their
capacity and with more synchronization with donors could assist
in the better use of donor aid.
