Long Live the Japanese - and They're Living Longer

A Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare report, released 1st March, shows that life expectancy in Japan in 2005 rose to 85.52 years for women and 78.56 for men.

Compared to 2000, this is an increase of 0.92 years for women and 0.84 for men.

The complete life table as it is called, is compiled from the national census conducted every five years.

The data mean that Japanese women have the longest life expectancy in the world, ahead of those in Hong Kong and Spain, while Japanese men are ranked fourth, behind men in Hong Kong, Iceland and Switzerland.
