One cup of coffee
can change a villager's life

The name Kilimanjaro arouses images
of Africa’s tallest mountain (5,895m), which
appears in the novels of Ernest Hemingway. Kilimanjaro,
which lies at the foot of this mountain, has been
receiving the aid of JOICFP’s Integration Project
(IP) since 1983. With IP, JOICFP integrates family
planning, maternal and child health, health education,
parasite control, and reproductive health activities
to improve the quality of life for people living in
villages in this area.
|
 |
| IP is currently in operation in 138
villages, with 420,000 villagers, and its activities
are diverse. For example, JOICFP conducts the training
of community-based service providers and traditional
birth attendants, who oversee the safe delivery of babies
and provide post-partum guidance to mothers. More specifically,
IP activities include the following: parasite control
and health education for elementary school children,
promotion of daycare centers for children, construction
of toilets, provision of essential medicine, and improvement
of child nutrition. JOICFP also conducts vocational
training in various income-generating activities (i.e.
vegetable gardening, chicken-rearing, and tailoring)
in an effort to help villagers become self-sufficient.
In addition, JOICFP promotes the increase of ponds in
which to raise fish, a major source of protein for villagers.
|
| Many villagers in the Kilimanjaro region
make their living by growing coffee. However, their lifestyle
is one of struggle because their income from selling coffee
beans to coffee traders is lower than the actual cost
of growing the coffee. Under such circumstances, coffee
growers are discouraged and give up growing coffee altogether.
In an effort to combat this hardship, JOICFP roasts the
best quality coffee harvested in Kilimanjaro (so-called
“Snowtop”, Grade A), and sells it in packs
of 200 grams at 800 yen each (prices may vary for purchases
outside Japan. Please contact
us for information). With the sale of one pack, 80
yen are generated to be used for improving the quality
of life for villagers, particularly vulnerable people
such as women and children, in Kilimanjaro. The coffee
beans JOICFP uses are authentically Kilimanjaro. We have
received high acclaim and trust for our roasting technology
and quality control. Please support JOICFP's IP by purchasing
Kilimanjaro Coffee. We also welcome anyone interested
in importing raw Kilamanjaro Coffee beans to help farmers
in Kilamanjaro through JOICFP. |
