The popular children’s
picture book Pika-Pika, which describes how a reconditioned
bicycle travels from Japan to Africa and assists
in community health care, has now been translated
into English. Published by JOICFP, this charming
book skillfully delivers information on reproductive
health (RH) issues in a manner that is easily acceptable
to young children.
There is a shortage of children’s material
concerning population and RH, topics that are usually
reserved for adults, yet Pika-Pika shows that if
children are introduced to these ideas through suitable
material awareness can be raised at even preschool
age. An additional benefit is that mothers will
usually read the story to their children, thereby
exposing them to RH messages as well.
