What We Do with Your Donation

Creating a world where everyone can live authentically with health and empowerment

Ending Violence Against Women and Girls

Violence against women and girls strips them of their fundamental human rights. It is deeply rooted in gender inequality, harmful social norms, and a lack of understanding about consent and rights – factors often compounded by poverty.
Globally many young people have inadequate access to accurate information about physical and emotional development, nor to education that encourages them to value life of their own and others and live authentically — both in schools and in society. These are essential in promoting gender equality and mutual respect, empowering girls to make informed decisions.
Through the Tokyo Marathon 2026 Charity, JOICFP will use the donations to support activities to protect girls from violence in Zambia (Africa) and Japan.

Zambia: Preventing Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Challenges Faced by Women in Zambia, Africa
In the Kapiri Mposhi district of Zambia, HIV prevalence is higher than the national average. Women and girls in this area have faced increased risks of gender-based violence, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, including early and forced marriage and unions and unintended teenage pregnancies.

Survey Findings on Violence against Women and Girls
A survey conducted by JOICFP in this district revealed that almost 90% of female respondents reported experiencing some form of violence within the past month. This violence includes physical assault, emotional abuse, sexual violence, and financial harassment.
Of particular concern is that 61% of these women reported experiencing violence from their husbands or male partners.

Factors Contributing to the Problems

The following factors contribute to these issues, especially among young people:

  • Limited access to accurate information about physical and emotional development, health, as well as life skills
  • Difficulty using healthcare
  • Poverty
  • Gender inequality

Case 1
Precious lives in Damson Village, Kapiri Mposhi District, with her husband and their three children. While pregnant with their fourth child, she experienced violence from her husband. Although her husband was sending financial support for his two children from a previous marriage, his ex-wife visited his workplace to ask for additional support. This triggered his violence against Precious. She immediately went to the hospital for a check-up, and fortunately, there were no problems with her unborn baby. Subsequently, her husband was sentenced to 14 months in prison.

Case 2
Faith, a 19-year-old woman living in Chitumbala Village, Kapiri Mposhi District, is raising her child alone. The child’s father refused to take responsibility from the moment he found out about the pregnancy, was abusive toward Faith, and left home. Life with just Faith and her mother at her family home is not easy. Having dropped out of school in the first year of junior high, Faith has few job options and currently earns money by doing laundry for households in the village. She earns around 100 kwacha (about 500 yen) on good days and as little as 30 kwacha (about 150 yen) on bad days. There are no support systems for young mothers facing such harsh economic and emotional challenges, and Faith spends each day burdened by anxiety about her future.
Activities to be Funded by Tokyo Marathon Charity

Using the Tokyo Marathon 2026 Charity donations, JOICFP will carry out the following activities:

Strengthening Peer Education
JOICFP will strengthen peer education among young people on physical and emotional development.
Topics covered include:

  • Prevention of gender-based violence
  • Prevention of unintended pregnancies
  • Prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections
  • Other topics related to physical and mental health of young people
Improving Young People’s Access to Healthcare
JOICFP will introduce adolescent-friendly health services at clinics in the district.
Teaching Young People Practical Skills for the Future
To help young people become economically self-reliant, JOICFP will provide training to learn practical skills such as sewing.
Support for Sustainability
JOICFP will support the communities to sustain these activities by themselves to achieve the goal of empowering young people to address challenges on their own.

Japan: Protecting Young People from Sexual Violence and Sexual Abuse

Current Situation: Limited Opportunities for Sexuality Education in Schools
Japan’s national curriculum guidelines set the standards for what to be taught in schools, but they offer limited education on physical and emotional development. As a result, many students have few opportunities to learn about sexuality in a comprehensive and age-appropriate way.
Survey Findings on Youth Awareness
A 2023 survey conducted by JOICFP among people aged 15 to 29 revealed the following:

  • Over 90% responded that they believe respecting their partners’ feelings is important in sexual consent
  • However, about 40% admitted that they don’t fully understand what sexual consent actually means.
  • The most common source of information about sex was the internet and social media.

These results show that although young people value respectful relationships, many lack accurate knowledge and understanding of sexuality.

The Alarming Reality of Sexual Violence
According to the Japanese Government’s 2023 Gender Equality White Paper:

  • 8.1% of women and 0.7% of men have experienced unwanted sexual acts.
  • The number of reported cases exceeded 2,700 annually, an increase of 63.8% from the previous year.

A new problem called “sexual deepfakes” has also emerged recently – AI-generated fake explicit images being spread on social media.

The Need for Adults to Learn Together
To prevent young people from experiencing or causing sexual harm, it is essential that not only young people but also the adults who support them – parents, educators, and caregivers – learn about sexuality education together. Creating a safe and respectful society starts with shared knowledge and open communication.

Sexuality Education Outreach Program for High School Students

Learning Together as a Community
We create opportunities not only for young people but also for their parents and teachers to learn accurate and essential knowledge about Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
Learning Objectives
  • Encourage individuals to take SRHR as personally relevant and important
  • Provide opportunities to reflect on and challenge existing assumptions and biases related to sex and gender
  • Help participants realize the importance of learning about SRHR
Materials and Content
Using JOICFP’s original educational tools, such as the “SRHR NOTE,” participants will learn about:

  • The meaning and importance of sexual consent – respecting your partner’s feelings and boundaries
  • Accurate information about physical and emotional development
  • How to prevent sexual violence
  • How to prevent unintended pregnancies
Goal
To build a society where more people understand SRHR as a fundamental human right and act with respect, care, and responsibility for both themselves and others.

A Youth Leader (Peer Activist) Explaining SRHR to Young People

*1 Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)
SRHR refers to the rights of every individual to:
1) have accurate knowledge, autonomy, and the power to make informed decisions about their own sexual and reproductive health
2) access the necessary healthcare based on their own will, and
3) protect their dignity and health.
SRHR includes the right to decide whether or not to have children, when to have them and how many. It also covers issues such as sexually transmitted infections, HPV and cervical cancer, gender, and sexuality. SRHR is a fundamental concept and essential life skill that is deeply connected to our everyday lives and overall well-being.

*2 SRHR NOTE
A comprehensive educational resource developed by JOICFP, designed to provide young people – especially those in their teens and twenties – with essential information on SRHR, such as understanding one’s body, relationships with partners, sex, sexually transmitted infections, HPV and cervical cancer, pregnancy, gender, and sexuality.
