JOICFP promotes “Change!”,
an acronym for “Community Health Action Networking
for Evolution”, in which JOICFP develops effective
strategies to bring forth behavior change among target
individuals and to create an conducive environment to
allow this behavior change (Behavior Change Communication
(BCC) Strategy). In the strategy development, Change!
emphasizes emotional components of communication that
appeals to and raises personal emotions for change, in
addition to the knowledge and awareness communication
activities. Furthermore, Change! promotes
the creation of a sense of ownership of individual decisions
by increasing “options” for individuals to
make choices. Health messages tend to have “absolute”
value with no question about its correctness. Therefore,
oftentimes we forget to allow room for our target audience
to make “choices”. Finally, the strategy emphasizes
the creation of an enabling environment together with
community support, which will allow the individuals to
put their desired choice into action.
Background
One of the longest experiences of JOICFP is taken root
in the educational strategy since its inception, starting
with the use of “parasite control” as an entry
point into the community to create motivation on family
planning. Over the years, JOICFP has tested various approaches
that emphasize supportive environment building to meet
the individual desire. Through the endeavor, JOICFP has
developed its own theory on BCC (Behavior Change Communication),
which focus on emotion communication and option making.
JOICFP has also strengthened its technical capacity to
put the theory into practice benefiting from Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT), namely “DigiPlan”
and “Approduction.” DigiPlan boosts BCC by
“Assetizing” and “Multi-solution”
Technologies, which add new values to information contents
gathered from grassroots level projects. Approduction
is needs-oriented training and consultancy program for
capacity building of BCC managers and technical personnel,
focusing on developing “high quality” materials
with available resources, utilizing “appropriate
skills” fit for the situation of each country.
