| Women's Empowerment & Gender Equalty |
Background & Issues
Regardless of regulations and laws in support of women’s
human rights, the status of women continue to be low in
many societies, deriving the woman of vast opportunities
to improve her well-being. Her status in society influences
whether she can obtain economic or educational opportunities,
as well as her chances in obtaining better health. When
her status is low, she may have no control over her own
health condition, including her fertility and she may
suffer from the lack of attention given to her body, despite
that she faces grave risks in relation to pregnancy and
delivery. Moreover, when placed in disadvantaged circumstances,
trafficking of women as well as coercion into sex industries
becomes a critical issue. Gender imbalances can lead to
violence against women, which results in not only physical,
but also psychological suffering. One can see that despite
actions being taken, women continue to suffer greatly
due to the low status of women in society.
JOICFP Strategy & Goal
Empowering women and addressing gender issues are essential
to safeguarding women’s health. This is especially
so with regards to their reproductive health. Many women
who do not have the power of choice over their fertility
will face neglect when it comes to pregnancy and delivery.
Upgrading their social status in their families and community
is crucial in enabling women to make their own health
decisions. JOICFP strives to create a society in which
a woman can enjoy equal opportunities as men and have
equal access to appropriate information and services that
will protect her health. For this, JOICFP involves and
works with the community to create a supportive and enabling
environment. Strategies to involve men and to obtain support
from local leaders of the community are also central to
JOICFP.
