UNGASS Review Meeting: NGO recommendations to the Japanese government

Regarding the UNGASS Review Meeting, to be held in UN New York from 31st May to 2nd June where a comprehensive review of and a high-level meeting on progress achieved in realizing the targets set out in the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/ AIDS will take place, NGO members of the Open Regular Dialog submitted to MOFA recommendations for the Japanese government, including the following points:

- Reaffirm and fully implement the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS

- The Japanese government should include in its Statement at the UNGASS Review Meeting that Japan will make its utmost effort to accomplish universal access to prevention, care and treatment by 2010

- NGO/civil society representatives be allowed to participate in the official Japanese delegation

- Pay special consideration to taking a comprehensive approach and creating links between programs on HIV/AIDS programs and those on reproductive health/sexual health and gender equality in Japanfs ODA planning and implementation

Final Report on NGO study group activities: malaria prevention project

NGOs reported on the completion of NGO study group activities in fiscal year 2005 that were supported by MOFAfs NGO capacity building fund. This year, NGO groups focused on studying the effective integration of malaria prevention components into existing health-related projects in malaria-affected regions such as Africa, and the learning and findings through the activities were put into draft proposals for malaria prevention by participating NGOs.

JOICFP cooperated in the Africa-Japan Forum, the secretariat of study group activities, in field visits to Zambia where participating NGOs observed malaria prevention activities. (Link to April eNEWS) Wakako Kai, Resource Development and Campaign, JOICFP, had presented a draft proposal based on JOICFPfs possible approach to integrating malaria prevention activities into existing RH projects at the final report session in March.
