Brief History and Major JOICFP Activities   Major Events in Japan and the World
  1963 1st Asia Population Conference was held in New Delhi.
  1965 World Population Conference by experts was held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
  1966 "Population Declaration" signed by 12 heads of state, including Japan, was submitted to the United Nations.
Japanese Conference for International Cooperation in Family Planning was founded as the predecessor of JOICFP.
Family Planning Seminar for Asia was initiated.
1967 United Nations Trust Fund on Population Activity, the predecessor of the United Nations Population Fund was established.
William Draper, advisor to IPPF, visited Japan advocating the need for international cooperation in population and family planning.
JOICFP was established. (April 22) 1968  
JOICFP began its full collaboration with the government's bilateral technical cooperation projects. 1969 The Japanese government began its contribution to IPPF (US$100,000 at first).
  1970 Japan's population exceeded 100 million.
  1971 Japanese government began its contribution to UNFPA (US$1.5 million at the beginning which includes US$0.5 million for IPPF).
JOICFP cooperated in the organization of the Asia Population Conference 1972 2nd Asia Population Conference was held in Tokyo.
The Council on Population Education (CPE) was founded.
A mission of Japanese parliamentarians was sent to Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and India.
1973 Oil Crisis.
The 1st Asia Parasite Control/Family Planning (APCO/FP) Conference was held in Tokyo.
The Integrated Project (IP) was advocated, combining family planning, nutrition and parasite control.
1974 UN World Population Year. Japan Parliamentarians Federation for Population (JPFP) was established. Japan Population Conference was held. World Population Conference, first conference by government representatives was held in Bucharest, Romania.
IP project in Taiwan was initiated. 1975  
IP project began in Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. 1976  
Family Planning Fact-finding Mission was sent to Mexico, Colombia and Brazil. 1977 Gandhi administration (Congress Party) in India was defeated in the general elections affected partially by its forced sterilization policy.
"South-to-South Cooperation" by IP project countries was advocated. 1978  
The 1st Latin America IP Promotion Conference (CAPRI) was held.
Memorandum on cooperation in population and family planning programs with China was signed.
1980  
JOICFP served as the Secretariat for the Parliamentarians' Conference in Asia, held in Beijing. 1981 1st Asian Parliamentarian Conference on Population and Development was held in Beijing.
The 1st IP project in Africa was initiated in Tanzania. 1983  
IP project began in China. 1984 International Population Conference was held in Mexico City.
IP Workshop for sub-Saharan African countries was organized in Tokyo. 1985  
JOICFP served as the Secretariat for IPPF World Conference held in Tokyo. 1986  
The 1st African Regional IP Training Course (PANFRICO) was held in Tanzania. 1987 World population exceeded 5 billion.
JOICFP celebrated its 20th anniversary. Sending reconditioned bicycles to developing countries began. 1988 Asian population exceeded 3 billion.
  1989 Japanese government began grassroots grant aid projects.
  1990 International Forum on Population in the 21st Century was held in Amsterdam.
Assistance programs began with contributions by Postal Savings for International Voluntary Aid (POSIVA). 1991 Parliamentarian mission from Japan on Population and Development was sent to Zimbabwe, Kenya and Ghana.
  1992 UN Earth Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Fundraising campaign for international cooperation by collecting and selling used telephone/railway prepaid cards. 1993  
JOICFP joined in the formation of the guidelines for the Global Issues Initiative (GII) by the Japanese government. A JOICFP staff member attended the UN International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo as a member of the Japanese Official Delegation. 1994 Japanese government began the Global Issues Initiative (GII) on Population and HIV/AIDS
International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was held in Cairo, Egypt.
  1995 Social Development Summit was held in Copenhagen.
World Conference on Women was held in Beijing.
JOICFP moved to the new Hoken Kaikan Shinkan building. 1996 The Eugenic Protection Law was partially revised and renamed as the Maternity Protection Law.
JOICFP cooperation with the JICA Reproductive Health Project in Vietnam was initiated. 1997  
JOICFP celebrated its 30th anniversary. 1998  
  1999 Japanese government approved the use of the low-dose oral contraceptive pill.
World population exceeded 6 billion.
UN organized the ICPD+5 Special Session.
JOICFP obtained consultative status to UN/ECOSOC. 2000 UN organized the Beijing +5 conference.
Japanese government began the GII/IDI (Infectious Diseases Initiative)
JOICFP cooperation with the JICA Partnership Program (Bangladesh) began.
JOICFP received a UN Population Award.
2001 The events of 9-11
Responding to ICPD POA
Seminar on RH for senior officers - capacity building of NGO towards community-based RH entrusted by JICA began.
JOICFP assistance to Afghanistan began. 2002 IPPF celebrated 50th anniversary.
International Conference on Reconstruction Assistance to Afghanistan was held in Tokyo.
UN organized the Rio+10 conference in Johannesburg.
