Update on Community Activities
for Indonesia Male Involvement
Activities
The Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association (IPPA) implemented activities targeting married men (consisting mainly of farmers and laborers) whose wives were pregnant or just delivered (19–50 years old) in four villages in West Java Province.
Major activities conducted by the trained male volunteers included regular home visits to families with pregnant women, the establishment of community savings, the involvement of religious and traditional leaders as important information channels, and the combination of radio programs and call-in or short mails via cell phones as an interactive but also mass information route.

Achievements

The project’s final evaluation showed great improvements in the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of targeted men in terms of the main objective of the intervention, which was to promote the “healthy pregnancy and safe delivery” movement. The percentage of men who knew at least three danger signs during pregnancy rose from 1% to 85% at the Tasikmalaya project site and from 1% to 96% in Indramayu. The percentage of husbands who accompanied their wives for ANC increased from 37% to 70% in Tasikmalaya, while the percentage of husbands discussing RH issues with their wives increased from 21.1% to 42% in Indramayu. This showed a stronger partnership among couples with regard to RH.
