Mid-term Review for UNFPA Myanmar Project
Activities
Covering 112 townships under the UNFPA program, the project serves to bring about behavior change through a two-fold strategy. One is to have community-level interventions in 32 selected townships, where community volunteers are recruited and trained for every 30 households, to serve as a pipe between the people and health services. Furthermore, youth information corners are set up in the same townships, where 45 youth volunteers are also recruited for reaching out especially to youth. The second strategy is to cover the whole 112 townships with appropriate information, education, and communication (IEC) materials on RH to be used by health personnel and community volunteers. This is accompanied by training on behavior change communication (BCC) for health staff.
Achievements
As a result of the ongoing activities, so far approximately 30,000 community volunteers have been recruited, along with 1,000 youth volunteers. These volunteers have actively promoted RH in their villages, providing basic but appropriate knowledge and promoting the access of their neighbors to health services. These community-level endeavors have resulted in an increase in contraceptive prevalence, visits to antenatal care (ANC), and deliveries attended by skilled birth attendants. The program is ongoing, and a final evaluation will be undertaken in 2010.
